Wine & Cheese Party
at Carroll's Jewelers
March 2008

Meet Gary Bowersox, explorer, author and gem hunter, whose book, "The Gem Hunter, True Adventures of an American in Afghanistan" tells how he lives his life like Indiana Jones.

The Gem Hunter to Present Central Asian Collection at Carroll’s Jewelers on Miracle Mile in March 2008

Gem hunter, explorer, and author Gary Bowersox will arrive in Coral Gables with more than 60,000 gemstones from Central Asia and his tales of an extremely difficult 2,500-mile road and trail trip through Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Bowersox has led expeditions into Afghanistan each summer for 30 years (see his web site at www.gems-afghan.com), purchasing gems in the rough valued at millions of dollars. He will bring his collection to Carroll’s Jewelers on Miracle Mile March 8 through 11. Carroll's owner, Steve Moorman is planning a special wine and cheese party on Friday evening, March 10 from 6 to 9pm. The public is invited to attend and meet the world famous gem hunter. Mr. Bowersox will present a slide show of his latest expedition and research.

The Hindu Kush Mountains of Central Asia are now yielding emeralds, rubies, sapphires, aquamarines, tourmalines, spinels, lapis lazuli, and many other rare gems. The Bowersox exhibit includes not only spectacular cut gems such as a 169-carat aquamarine and a 32.32-carat ruby featured in Gems and Gemology Magazine, but also beautiful specimens of gems and minerals, such as a 7.5 pound rich blue aquamarine specimen and lapis carvings and boxes.

Last summer Bowersox climbed three passes more than 14,000 feet high to reach the emerald mines in Panjsher Valley, the more than 7,000-year-old lapis mines of Sar-e-Sang, and the ancient spinel mines of Kuh-i-Lal, Tajikistan. Two of the countries he visited, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, are considered the two most dangerous countries to visit. Bowersox will explain how they obtained and maintained this designation during his summer explorations there.

His company is involved in geological and satellite/GPS studies of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. He advises village miners on ways to explore, improve production, and promote their gem and mineral industry to create employment and build an economy. During July and August, Bowersox guided a team to the lapis and emerald mines in Afghanistan to film a television documentary for International TV. A copy of the documentary film is available for order from his web site.

Bowersox wears the Central Asian local attire for his slide events describing the gem mining, the local people, and his own adventures. Co-author of the book Gemstones of Afghanistan, he is a leading authority on gemstones in the area. His latest book, titled The Gem Hunter, is also available widely.
